The Town of Carmel is Putnam’s largest town by population (34,305 in 2010), and serves as the seat of Putnam County, hosting the Putnam County Legislature’s offices and the County Courthouse.

The town is governed by the Town Board made up of five members including the Supervisor and four Town Council members. There are no term limits. Below are links to several relevant websites.

Carmel has two school districts, Carmel and Mahopac, and two hamlets by the same names.

The Town has no recycling center or composting drop off program. It does hold annual E-Waste Collection and Paper Shredding events, typically held at the Michael Geary Memorial Skating Rink on Route 6, opposite the Mahopac Fire Department. More information can be found on the here on the town website or by calling Town Hall at 845-628-1500.

Sustainable Putnam strongly encourages each of our towns to participate in either the Clean Energy Community or Climate Smart Community program. Currently, the Town of Carmel does not participate in either.

ACTION: Send an email or make a phone call to the Town Supervisor and Town Council. Tell them that you’re a resident and a Sustainable Putnam member and strongly encourage them to join the Climate Smart Community or Clean Energy Community programs. Want to do more to develop Carmel’s resilience and sustainability? Send an email indicating your interest to info@sustainableputnam.org.
